TEFL/TESOL Accreditation Standards Overview
The GATES Standards ensure consistent excellence across both in-person and online TEFL/TESOL courses. Upon submission of an accreditation application, GATES will identify and address any standards not applicable to the specific course type.

The standards are organized into four key categories:
- Organisation Standards
- Course Standards
- Feedback and Assessment standards
- Staff Standards
Organisation Standard
- Management Accountability: Clear roles, efficient communication, tutor performance monitoring, and certification processes.
- Administrative Practices: Maintenance of comprehensive records, robust contingency planning, and safeguarding confidentiality.
- Student Services: Clear pre-enrolment information, recognition of prior learning, and effective handling of complaints and appeals.
- Financial Procedures: Transparent refund policies.
- Resources and Policies: Accessible policies covering diversity, health, and safety, supported by adequate teaching materials
Course Standards
- Design: Course development must address student needs, align with objectives, and integrate independent learning. It must be designed and maintained by qualified professionals.
- Delivery: Courses must prioritize engagement, practical application, and up-to-date methodologies. Delivery must meet documented criteria for student support and assessment strategies.
- Evaluation: A structured evaluation process should ensure continuous improvement through feedback from students, tutors, and external reviewers.
Feedback and Assessment Standards
- Feedback: Students receive structured, constructive input to foster motivation and improvement.
- Assessment: Assessments must meet principles of fairness, validity, and reliability. Internal moderation systems should ensure consistency, with clear procedures for appeals and certificate verification.
Staff Standards
- Qualifications and Development: Staff must possess relevant expertise, supported by ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Tutor Excellence: Tutors must demonstrate professional qualifications and stay updated on teaching methodologies.
For each standard, GATES outlines the evidence required for the accreditation audit. Upon submission of an application and payment of the accreditation fee, guidance will be provided to ensure all necessary evidence is documented and presented effectively.
